The Elements of Astronomy by Simon Newcomb appears to be a good introductory book to astronomy. You can see chapter 2 of the book at the Website of the physics department of CSBSJU or you can download a PDF of the entire book on the Internet Archive for free. The book was printed in 1900 and is now, from what I have read, out of copyright. Some parts of the book might be out of date, but in many respects the book is not: our solar system and the causes of its motion remain the same. Elements has some concise, effective explanations and diagrams.

Here is a diagram used in the explanation of the seasons:

Dr. Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D., has two blog posts at About.com, one dated 12-7-07 and one dated 8-5-08, about an excellent chemistry book for children (or beginning adults): The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments. Her post also has a link to her own “Home Chemistry Kit” and her “Home Experiments.”

Announcement: New Classes Starting Soon!

Filed under: Announcements — Administrator @ 1:44 am

Welcome. I know how difficult it can be to find high-quality, expert instructors for yourself or your child.

If you are looking for someone to give you or your child mastery of a subject as part of an education — i.e., as part of learning to reason and use logic — you have come to the right place.

Live, affordable, high-quality group classes — via easy, user-friendly “virtual classroom” technology (see my home page for information) — will be starting in January. I will offer algebra, algebra 2, and geometry classes (with a required minimum class size of 6). Email me soon to reserve a spot!

If you would like a class in precalculus, calculus, statistics, SAT or ACT, we could form a class if at least 6 people are interested. Email me to let me know of your interest!

Each class will be held once a week, at a cost of $60 per month. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, or as students’ schedules dictate. Let me know in your email (1) what subject you are interested in, (2) what time(s) of day and day(s) of week fits your schedule, and  (3) what questions you might have.

What you get:

●Personalized attention

●Step-by-step, logical methods

●Focus on how and why, not just what

●Confidence and subject mastery

●A solid education in reasoning and thinking skills

●An expert instructor who knows more than just the math, who brings in science, history, law, literature and logic
