“The Song of the Builder” by Edgar Guest

Filed under: Art — Administrator @ 11:46 pm

I sink my piers to the solid rock,
And I send my steel to the sky,
And I pile up the granite, block by block
Full twenty stories high;
Nor wind nor weather shall wash away
The thing that I’ve builded, day by day.

Here’s something of mine that shall ever stand
Till another shall tear it down;
Here is the work of my brain and hand,
Towering above the town.
And the idlers gay in their smug content,
Have nothing to leave for a monument.

“I Give Thanks” by Grace Fallow Norton

Filed under: Art — Administrator @ 6:37 pm

There’s one that I once loved so much
I am no more the same.
I give thanks for that transforming touch.
I tell you not his name.

He has become a sign to me
For flowers and for fire.
For song he is a sign to me
And for the broken lyre.

And I have known him in a book
And never touched his hand.
And he is dead—I need not took
For him through his green land.

“Who Loves the Rain?” by Frances Shaw, 1917

Filed under: Art — Administrator @ 1:00 pm

Who loves the rain
And loves his home,
And looks on life with quiet eyes,

Him will I follow through the storm;

And at his hearth-fire keep me warm;
Nor hell nor heaven shall that soul surprise,
Who loves the rain,
And loves his home,

And looks on life with quiet eyes.

“Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou

Filed under: Art — Administrator @ 5:50 pm

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

“Progress” by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Filed under: Art — Administrator @ 10:50 am

Let there be many windows to your soul,
That all the glory of the universe
May beautify it. Not the narrow pane
Of one poor creed can catch the radiant rays
That shine from countless sources. Tear away
The blinds of superstition; let the light
Pour through fair windows broad as Truth itself
And high as God.

“We Belong” by Pat Benatar

I’ve loved the song “We Belong” since seeing Allison Holker dance a solo to it years ago on So You Think You Can Dance , some episodes of which (of this season and last only) you can watch online.

The mountains that enfold the vale
With walls of granite, steep and high,
Invite the fearless foot to scale
Their stairway toward the sky.

“A Father’s Wish” By Edgar Guest

Filed under: Art,Language — Administrator @ 12:36 am

What do I want my boy to be?
Oft is the question asked of me,
And oft I ask it of myself–
What corner, niche or post or shelf
In the great hall of life would I
Select for him to occupy?
Statesman or writer, poet, sage
Or toiler for a weekly wage,
Artist or artisan? Oh, what
Is to become his future lot?
For him I do not dare to plan;
I only hope he’ll be a man.
